"We've got enough green beans."

The director of the North Platte homeless shelter, serving on a panel of social services agencies, said, "We've got enough green beans."

His comment came in response to a question a member of our Leadership Lincoln County class asked members of the panel. Dave asked, "What can we do?"

To which he quipped, "We have enough green beans. Come down and have lunch with the residents."

I am haunted by his response. I was ready to open my wallet and give him every bill I was carrying. His presentation had been that moving. But, he didn't want my money. My heart fell as I saw the door to the easy way out closing before my eyes.

Could this be how the disciples felt when Jesus responded to their question with a simple, "Come follow me."

It is easy to write a check or throw a $20 into the basket. It is clean, no muss-no fuss and no commitment. Such contributions may even be tax deductible. It's called a win-win. But, is it enough?

I believe it is important to share my treasure and contribute to worth causes. But Lent calls me deeper to the radical come follow me proclaimed in the Gospel.

I find the power of the Easter sacraments in this simple invitation. The water, the oil and the bread and wine challenge me as I stand face-to-face with our God and with the other members of our community. Sacraments only happen when we come together face-to-face in this place. It's as if I hear Jesus say, "We've got enough green beans, come follow me."

To this day, I haven't gone to have lunch with the residents. Lent reminds me that it is time.

"A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn." Ps. 51:19b
