Information and Simplicity

background4I want to remember several ideas David Winer and Jay Rosen made on their “Reboot the News #7” podcast. They talked about the connection between simplicity and participation. Making it simple for people to participate is a very democratic thing Jay said. I want to remember how important it is to make it simple for people to participate.

Another point Jay made saying, “It’s not that people need information to participate. It’s that when people participate they see why they need information.”  I confirm his observation from my own experience. Participation does increase my need for information. I find it frustrating when people and organizations with hold information or make obtaining the information I need to strengthen participation difficult to obtain. Restricting the flow of information is truly a method of control.
